Dream, Design, Create: Building Websites as A Creative Learning Practice

In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore the web as a space for limitless creative self-expression, designing for impact, and nurturing creative confidence. We’ll begin by situating the current landscape of web creation, focusing on the idea of the web as an expansive tool for creative thinking — and how we can support youth as creators, designers, and developers (rather than consumers) of the web as they dream of and design their own futures. In this discussion, we’ll provide participants with fodder for creating learning environments that nurture creative mindsets, encourage students to develop their identities as inclusive designers, and emphasize ways the web can be used as a tool for social impact. Next, we’ll split off into breakout rooms to experiment with playful, hands-on activities from Wix Education, a free platform and suite of resources and activities for bringing web creation to classrooms through a playful, constructionist lens. At the end of our activity, participants will share their creations together and reflect on the process of creative learning with the web. We’ll then return to the main room to conclude with a facilitated conversation about how to support students in using web creation as a vehicle for creativity and social impact in diverse learning environments.
