Creating a Dissertation Affinity Group: Finding your Posse or how to get through the dissertation and still enjoy lifeFor many doctoral students, the dissertation process is an almost insurmountable obstacle to completing the degree requirements. In this experimental and social session, an affinity space will be convened titled, “Find Your Posse.” Three recent doctoral graduates (May 2019) will share their experiences of juggling multiple responsibilities–working full time, familial obligations, while completing their dissertations. They formed an affinity group–which provided the support to see themselves as researchers and scholars while completing their writing. The concept of identity connects individuals with the larger world (Flum & Kaplan, 2012); “it synthesizes past, present and future experiences” and is “anchored in a sense of ’being part of’—a web of relationships, group solidarity, and communal culture” (p. 240).
This affinity space will provide participants with a roadmap to create their own “posse.” Participants are encouraged to invite their peers. The group will meet weekly throughout the summit on Zoom.
