Beyond Dashboards: Playful interaction design for assessment data

Games are a rich context for learning, and for learners to demonstrate what they know and can do. Telemetry data collected during gameplay can be used to understand many different aspects of the learning experience, which teachers can then use to support individual learners and guide their teaching practices. But how to analyze the data in ways that answer meaningful questions, and how to communicate the results to teachers in ways that are actionable, are still open questions. In order to go beyond conventional data dashboards such as those found in LMSes, this workshop will challenge participants to think deeply about what questions educators can ask of the data, and to imagine how educators and researchers can develop their data and assessment literacies through playing with data.
